Routes and transit times
Almost all container cargo from China to the UK lands at Felixstowe, Southampton or London Gateway, with Liverpool and Immingham taking smaller volumes and some cargo arriving via Rotterdam or Antwerp on a feeder ship. The shortest route runs through the Strait of Malacca, past Sri Lanka, up the Red Sea and through the Suez Canal into the Mediterranean, then out past Gibraltar. When carriers avoid the Red Sea, ships go round the Cape of Good Hope instead.

Avoiding Suez adds about 3,500 nm to every one of these pairs: Shanghai to Felixstowe goes from about 10,400 nm to about 13,900, roughly nine more days at 16 knots. Carriers diverted almost all Asia–Europe services round the Cape from early 2024. During 2026 they moved services back through Suez in stages, with Alphaliner reporting about 63 % of Far East–Europe capacity on the Suez route by late October and a full return expected around the first quarter of 2027. Check which route your service is actually using: it decides whether you are looking at five weeks or six and a half door to door.
Airfreight from Shanghai, Shenzhen or Hong Kong into Heathrow typically takes five to eight days door to door, express couriers two to five working days. Rail freight from China to the UK via Central Asia and Europe also exists and sits between sea and air on both time and price.
What it costs
Spot benchmark: Drewry World Container Index, Shanghai → Rotterdam: US$3,686 per 40ft container (29 October 2026). Spot rates move weekly and exclude destination charges, customs and inland delivery.
Drewry does not publish a UK lane, so the calculator uses its Shanghai–Rotterdam benchmark for UK ports: carriers price the main North Europe ports, Felixstowe included, at similar levels. Your quote will include UK terminal handling and often a port security or infrastructure charge on top. LCL is priced per W/M and is common for smaller importers from Ningbo, Shanghai and Shenzhen; most UK consolidators run weekly boxes.
UK import rules
- EORI number. Every UK importer needs an EORI number starting with GB before the goods arrive.
- Customs declaration. Imports are declared on HMRC's Customs Declaration Service, usually by your freight forwarder or customs agent.
- Duty. The UK Global Tariff rate for your commodity code is charged on CIF value: goods, freight and insurance to the UK border. China has no preferential trade agreement with the UK, so the standard rate applies.
- Import VAT. Usually 20 %, charged on the value including duty. VAT-registered businesses can use postponed VAT accounting to account for it on their VAT return instead of paying at the port, which removes a large cash-flow hit.
- The £135 rule. For consignments of £135 or less sold to UK consumers, VAT is collected by the seller or online marketplace at the point of sale, and customs duty is currently relieved. The government confirmed in July 2026 that the customs duty relief will be removed by October 2028 at the latest, replaced by a dedicated low-value import regime.
Mistakes on China–UK shipments
- Using a transit time from the wrong routing. A Cape routing adds over a week. Ask the forwarder which route the vessel is booked on.
- Paying import VAT at the border when you could postpone it. Postponed VAT accounting is optional; ask your agent to use it if you are VAT registered.
- Wrong commodity codes. Supplier-provided HS codes are often wrong for the UK tariff, which has ten-digit import codes. A misclassification can mean back-duty and penalties.
- Forgetting destination charges on CIF buys. A cheap CIF price can come with high Felixstowe delivery-order and handling fees billed to you.
- Underestimating Chinese New Year. Factories close for one to three weeks and ships fill up beforehand; order early or air the urgent part.
Questions shippers ask
How long does shipping from China to the UK take?
Via Suez, about 26–28 days at sea and typically five to seven weeks door to door. Round the Cape, add about nine days. Airfreight is roughly a week and express two to five working days.
How much does a container from China to the UK cost?
On 29 October 2026 the Drewry spot benchmark was US$3,686 for Shanghai to Rotterdam per 40ft container, the closest published lane to UK ports, for the ocean leg only. UK charges, customs and delivery are extra.
Do I pay VAT on goods from China?
Yes, import VAT at the standard 20 % for most goods. VAT-registered businesses can usually reclaim it, and can postpone it to their VAT return.
What is the best UK port for cargo from China?
Felixstowe handles the most deep-sea container traffic, with Southampton and London Gateway next. Choose the one with the best direct service and the shortest truck run to your warehouse.
