Routes and transit times
India sits between the two great east–west routes, so the right path depends on the US coast. To the East and Gulf Coasts, ships from Nhava Sheva (JNPT) and Mundra cross the Arabian Sea, transit the Red Sea and Suez Canal, cross the Mediterranean and the Atlantic. Avoiding the Red Sea, they go round the Cape of Good Hope instead, a much bigger detour for India than for China. To the West Coast, cargo goes east through the Strait of Malacca, usually transshipping in Colombo or Singapore, and across the Pacific.

With port calls and transshipment, plan on about four to six weeks door to door to the East Coast by sea. Airfreight from Mumbai, Delhi, Bengaluru or Chennai typically takes about a week, express two to five working days. There is no public weekly benchmark for this lane, so enter your forwarder's rate.
Why the Red Sea matters more from India
From Nhava Sheva, the Suez route to New York is about 8,200 nm. The Cape route is about 12,400 nm, more than 4,000 nm and roughly 11 days longer at 16 knots: proportionally over 50 % more distance, against about a third for Shanghai to Europe. When carriers diverted from the Red Sea, Indian exporters to the US East Coast saw the largest transit-time increases of any major lane. Check which route your service is on before you promise delivery dates.
Customs at both ends
- Indian export. The exporter needs an Importer-Exporter Code (IEC) from the DGFT and files a shipping bill through ICEGATE, usually via a customs broker. Export incentives and drawback claims hang on getting the shipping bill right.
- ISF. For ocean cargo to the US, the Importer Security Filing must be lodged at least 24 hours before loading in India, including at a transshipment port if the US-bound vessel is loaded there.
- US duty. Duty is charged on transaction value, without the ocean freight. India lost its US GSP benefits in 2019, so normal HTSUS rates apply, and the US has applied additional tariffs to many Indian goods since 2025. Check the total rate for your HTS code.
- No $800 de minimis. The exemption is suspended for all countries, which affects Indian e-commerce sellers shipping single parcels to US customers. The statutory exemption itself ends on 1 July 2027.
- Agency rules. Food, spices and cosmetics need FDA registration and prior notice; textiles need correct fibre-content labelling.
- Fees. MPF at 0.3464 % (minimum $34.58, maximum $670.86 for fiscal year 2027) and HMF at 0.125 % on ocean shipments.
Mistakes on India–US shipments
- Quoting a Suez transit time for a Cape routing. The gap is over ten days.
- Missing the ISF at a transshipment port. The 24-hour rule applies to the vessel that carries the cargo to the US.
- Heavy cargo in a 40-footer. Stone, tiles and metal goods hit the payload limit long before the box is full; use the container loading calculator and check US road weight limits.
- Under-documented food shipments. FDA holds and refusals are expensive and slow; get prior notice right before the vessel arrives.
Questions shippers ask
How long does shipping from India to the USA take?
About 22–25 days at sea from Nhava Sheva or Mundra to New York via Suez, and typically four to six weeks door to door. Round the Cape, add about 11 days at sea. To Los Angeles it is about 26 days at sea via Singapore.
Which Indian port is best for the US?
Nhava Sheva and Mundra on the west coast for the US East Coast and Gulf; Chennai on the east coast is closer for West Coast services through Singapore.
Do Indian goods pay US duty?
Yes, at normal HTSUS rates plus any additional tariffs currently applied to Indian goods. India is no longer a GSP beneficiary.
Can I ship small parcels from India to US customers duty free?
No. The $800 de minimis exemption is suspended for all countries, so low-value shipments pay duty too.
